When Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matt. 11:28-30), we tend to understand it generally as bringing to Jesus our worries and pains and sorrows. That may be correct. But there is something extra in that invitation by Jesus. He says “take my yoke upon you and learn from me”. What exactly is this yoke of Christ? What are we to learn from him? I think that taking up the yoke of Christ and learning from him would mean living like Christ. It is to become Christlike. It means allowing the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ to indwell in us as Paul makes clear in Romans 8. This indwelling of the Spirit implies that we take up the yoke of Christ. And since the Spirit radically changes who we are, or rather who we understand ourselves to be, we are led into learning meekness, humility, sacrifice, cross, doing good for others, selflessness, from Christ. Thus, we are no longer slaves to the exasperating burden of sin, of selfishness, of corruption, of double dealing, of insincerity, of clannishness and of dishonesty.
Dear friends, only Christ can offer us the peace of soul that we need. And without this inner peace, this inner rest, the world would remain restless.
