The world today is filled with many knowledgeable men and women. But the knowledge they have is a collection of information about things, persons and other realities. In fact, with the possibilities of the social media, we are now witnessing an epidemic of information overload.
Today, the Gospel offers us the pearl called wisdom. Wisdom is beyond knowledge. Wisdom is discerning because it is able to judge – to even judge knowledge, separating the right knowledge from the wrong knowledge, the relevant from the irrelevant, the appropriate from the inappropriate. Wisdom unlocks the knowledge that is hidden in the shadows, it uncovers mysteries, it beholds revelation.
The world is never made better by the volume of information and knowledge that we have or discover. Rather, life can only be better understood once we can access the wisdom that God gives. For us to do so, we need to be still and silent before the awesome presence of God in order to be both present to God (the Giver of wisdom, the Wisdom par excellence) and to ourselves (the receivers, and the image of God – imago Dei).
