“We unceasingly call to mind your work of faith and labour of love” (1 Thess.1:2-3). Paul associates ‘faith’ with ‘work’ & ‘love’ with ‘labour’ while addressing this community of believers, who understood the Gospel not merely as words but are deeply convinced that it is the power of the Holy Spirit to bring about transformation. Watching the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, one sees the ‘work of faith’ & the ‘labour of love’; a deep conviction that our society can be transformed into a space where there is zero impunity, where life is indeed sacred, where human dignity can be respected, where there is an alignment between the faith we profess & the reality of our society. The #EndSARS is thus some sort of Gospel; a Gospel that seeks not only the reform of the police but also of the mindset & attitude of the citizens (leaders & led), a Gospel that understands that responsible citizenship is not merely exercised by praying for the nation without a corresponding demand for accountability from public office holders. This is what it means to understand the place of God & the place of Caesar in the grand scheme of things (Mtt.22:15-21). Friends, to build a nation on the Gospel of Christ, with its demand for social justice, is a ‘work of faith’ & a ‘labour of love’! Meanwhile, this comes, as St. Paul puts it, with the “endurance of hope of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1Thess.1:3). In all our struggles for a better world for everyone, it is our prayer that our hope may never fail us.
