#SV – Christ’s Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts to be troubled or afraid” (Jn.14:27). One problem of the prosperity Gospel spirituality is that it often reduces the source of the peace of Christ to material blessings: “Once I make money, get that degree, seal that contract, buy that house, and marry that man/woman, then my life would be just fine.” Of course, all these are beautiful accomplishments that can bring joy into one’s life, but the question is: Without all these, can I still experience the peace of soul and contentment that only comes from God? Are we ready to give it all up for the sake of Christ and the Gospel? The peace of Christ challenges our Christian faith to seek that which is more enduring, never washed away by the fleeting pleasures and blessings of life, represented by power, wealth, and prestige. Jesus gave up everything to give us peace and to show us the pathway to peace, sustainable peace. Friends, only the peace of Christ can keep us untroubled and unafraid when things don’t go the way we had planned or when we lose everything material. Only the peace of Christ will make us choose the path of humility rather than resort to wars and the contest of egos. Only the peace of Christ will make us think of the greater good of everyone rather than insist on the triumph of our selfish ambitions. This is the peace of the martyrs: the peace of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the Nazi dungeon; the peace of Maximilian Kolbe when he gave his life in place of Franciszek Gajowniczek. Beloved, may the peace of the Lord be with you always!
