#SV – Judgment, Edgy?

We now live in a world where everyone is too sensitive to the word ‘judgment’ especially when it is coming from religious circles since it is always concerned with the question of virtues/vices, good/bad, or correct/wrong. Yet we are always very assertive when it comes to ‘drawing boundaries’ which is often determined by our subjective considerations. We are quick to determine who should be or not be in our lives, what should concern us or not, what to tolerate or reject. We cancel public offenders and call out people who do wrong. We call for the law to catch up with criminals and even protest if the punishment seems light. If that is not judgement, then what exactly is it? St. Paul reminds us that we shall all face the judgment seat of Christ where we shall “receive recompense, according to what we did in the body, whether good or evil” (2Cor.5:10). If the word ‘judgment’ is scary, let us then try to focus on bearing fruit, for the kingdom of God is compared to the seeds that grew overnight and bore fruits, or the mustard tree that became a shelter to all forms of birds in the sky (Mk 4:26-34). This tells us that pursuing virtues and thriving in the abundance of goodness will help us to live above the fear of any judgment. To do this we need to constantly assess our lives and daily choices.
