Why water? There is always this comparison between the force of fire and water, but it is clear that while water can quence the blazing fire, no fire can stop the raging waters. Even the absence of water leaves us to the threat of thirst & famine. In all this, there is the One whose power alone can burst forth as well as set limits to the waters (Job 38: 8-11; Ps.107:23-26); the One who “rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Quiet! Be still!’” (Mk.4:39; Ps.107:28-29); the One in & around whom creation is reborn and reordered (2Cor.5:17). More than the force of any water, his love is powerful and everlasting; a love that gives up life for death and yet breaks through the barriers of death to bring forth new life (vv.14-15). And so in our situations of confusion, fear, hopelessness, tragedy, sadness, and unlove, he reassures us with his presence and invites us to trust in God at all times. Little wonder the disciples “were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?’” (Mk.4:41). He is Jesus Christ, the living water; the love made flesh!
