There is no competing with God! We have to make choice and be clear about where our priorities are. There is always a grave danger when one who is not grounded in faith fails to understand what is at stake here. Recently there are records of some preachers make claims that poverty is antithetical to the Gospel, or that without money one can never speak for the body of Christ. This is quite ridiculous, no matter the context. When we have a teaching that prioritises and even idolises material wealth of the Christian, and even elevates as the measure of grace, then we have a problem. Of course, poverty (not the willing poverty of the religious) is a scandal and should not be allowed in a just society, but the inordinate pursuit of wealth have led many astray. We need to be careful as the scripture reminds.
