Georgie

Hello!

Hi, I’m Uche

I’m Georgie from the UK. And where are you from?

Oh! I’m from Nigeria. So, are you new to our Faculty of Theology?

Well, yes and no.

How do you mean?

I’m here as an Erasmus student. I actually study at Durham University.

That’s quite interesting. A young British lady: What exactly attracted you to the study of theology? Are you planning to be a pastoral worker or a theology professor or what?

Well, I’m an agnostic.

Agnostic? Like, you doubt if God really exists? That sort of thing?

Yeah. I doubt. I mean I don’t know if God exists or not. I’m searching for answers, and I felt theology might help in some way.

And so far, has theology been helpful?

I don’t know. I seem to have many questions. Sometimes it gets more confusing. I have many questions from Genesis to Revelation. Sometimes it makes sense. Sometimes it doesn’t. I have questions about the teachings of the church. Well, I’ve never really been a church-goer even though my parents were Anglicans. Typical English.

But what for you is the most confusing aspect of the Christian faith?

Oh dear. Where do I begin? Well, perhaps, for me … errmmm … it is the fact that Christians don’t agree, or that they rarely do, … and that the disagreement has led to bitter rivalries and wars, and has even continued till date. Come on Uche, you should know better. You are from Nigeria. Isn’t it?

Well, … sorry Georgie, it’s time for my next lecture of today. Incidentally it is a class on Ecumenism by Prof. Annemarie Mayer. Maybe you should come around and listen to her. She’s really good.

No. Thanks. I still need to tidy up some stuff in the library. Hopefully, next time.

We still need to continue our conversation please. Maybe over a cup of coffee or tea, or perhaps over a good Belgian beer (laughs). The pubs here are really good.

Yeah. Sure. I look forward to that Uche.

Alright do have a nice day Georgie.

Bye!

  1. Interesting conversation! The young british lady is not quite sure if God truely exist, she took a bold step by trying to find out herself, unknown to her, christians believe and worship God through faith and not by learning or going into discovery. God is so mysterious that the more you think his existence, the more confuse you become. The wonderful work of creation alone should tell one there is a creator. A story was once told about an atheist who was argueing with his friend about God’s existence, after much arguement the christian decided to quit the arguement because the atheist was difficult to be convinced, one day they were together and the christian presented to him a very wonderfully made shoe, the atheist was amazed and asked the company that made the shoe, the christian replied that the shoe was not made and maintained his stand, the atheist was confused ” are you mad” how can you say that the shoe was not made? The christian told him that the shoe just evolved just like you said that human beings evolved . We can now see that we all need each other , listening and trust to understand and agree on issues that gets us confused, everybody is entittled to his or her own opinion.

    1. Bravo Kelechi. Thanks for the comment. Of course, an experience of God is the best conviction of His existence. Yes, some prefer to go on a quest, a search, and I think that is also another form experience. Many of those who do so with open minds, end up overwhelmed by the depth of God. That explains why some would prefer to keep their distance or even be more belligerent against believers. You might want to check out the group called the Militant Atheists, who are ever ready to debate the best of christian intellectuals. At the end some questions elude them. God triumphs over all, all the time!

  2. A lovely story of Georgie and Uche. Great that both got along so well in their discussion. I think Georgie is open to learning “about God” whether He exists or not. Some have to come to “know God” from the experience of “knowing about Him”. Further discussion over Stella Artois will still be nice & can yield very positive outcome.
